ESSAYS

I have written for OtherZine since 2000. OtherZine is the online magazine of Other Cinema, a venue for experimental film, video and performance in San Francisco run by filmmaker Craig Baldwin. The following links will take you to the OtherZine site, where you will find my periodic column, as well as several interviews with contemporary filmmakers.

These links will open in separate browser windows.

  • Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show: or, Well, What Would Jesus Buy?
From OtherZine vol. 14. Jesus? He's not buying it. And neither should you.

  • Big Country: The Radical Roots of Country Music
From OtherZine vol. 13. An interview with filmmaker Jesse Drew about the red roots of 'red state' music.

  • Who is Bozo Texino: A Search with Bill Daniel
From OtherZine vol. 12. An interview with filmmaker Bill Daniel about his latest film on hobo graffiti, art on the run, and life off the grid.

  • Bata-ville: We Are Not Afraid of the Future
From OtherZine vol. 11. A checklist for your road trip to utopia: ideals, fellow-travelers, shoes.

  • Darkon
From OtherZine vol. 11. Dressing up in costumes, playing serious games.

  • Lars von Trier
From OtherZine vol. 8. Unwrapping the enigma: a review of Jack Stevenson's book on the provocative filmmaker.

  • Interview with Chris Strompolos
From OtherZine vol. 7. Star of the fanfilm cult classic, Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation, Chris Strompolos not only works in film, he grew up inside it. The Adaptation is a shot-by-shot recreation of the Spielberg film, that took Chris and his friends from age 12 to 18 to complete. Now in his thirties and a filmmaker, here he discusses his unique perspective on a life in film from the inside out.

  • Interview with Keith Sanborn
From OtherZine vol. 5. Keith Sanborn specializes in the detournement of images we only think we know. Infused with humor, mystery, conspiracy, and sex, Sanborn's work is in turn wise, weird, and wanton. His For the Birds (2000) was selected for inclusion in the 2002 Whitney Biennial.

  • Interview with Thad Povey
From OtherZine vol. 2. Thad Povey, alone and in collaboration, spins tall tales of adventure, beauty, and archival footage into something that's not just for breakfast anymore. With the Scratch Film Junkies, he hand-alters film, giving new meaning to the term 'digital.' A latter-day renaissance man, Povey's interests encompass rockets, archaeology, news media, and the anarchy of accordions, to name only a few.

  • Essays in Other Cinema
(My Column on Film, Culture-Jamming, and Other Topics of Interest)
Some of my personal favorites here include reviews of "The Wizard of Oz" with Pink Floyd's "The Wall" (11/04/01); Leslie Stevens' "Incubus" starring a pre-Star Trek William Shatner with dialogue in Esperanto (03/10/01); Jon Jost's short video work (11/18/00); and an article that poses the question, "What are mad scientists so mad about?" (10/28/00).

  • Webby Awards
I've been a judge in the Film Category for the Webby Awards since 2001. Follow this link to check out nominated and winning sites from this year, and years past.
